THE DIVINE IN DESIGN
Plains Zebra and Calligraphy
A group of zebras is aptly named a ‘dazzle’, for as they move, their bodies coalesce into a kaleidoscope of interweaving stripes and pattern, an unfettered display of linear conversation.
The individual is camouflaged in plain sight, indistinguishable from the whole through a language created by nature, a design of the divine.
With inspiration derived from the fluidity in nature, calligraphy is a parallel art form where letters dance, twirl, and interlace like whispers in motion. Its is as much a celebration of each character as it is of the message.
Persian calligraphy, most notably Nasta’liq, was crafted as more than art, it is a connection to the divine through the act of written word, it is a spiritual practice.
Forming a nexus between the script and stripe, calligraphic elements materialise within the markings of the interlocking zebras.
A personal transmittance is rendered in this piece, with the calligraphic form of the Hindi lettering for the phrase ‘The Divine in Design’ written into the fabric of the artwork.
